The Fidget Factor in Weight Control
Have you ever wondered why a number of people can eat
anything they want and not gain an ounce of weight. This is because of the
FIDGET FACTOR, and according to studies conducted at the Mayo clinic in Rochester,
MN this is due to the fact they actually expend a significant amount of calories everyday just from fidgeting. This is
called N.E.A.T (non-exercise activity thermo genesis) many non exercise
activities such as continuous leg crossing, rocking or bobbing, keeping good
posture by stretching and frequently standing just about any activity that
denotes a person is on edge or restless.
16 people were studied after ingesting 1000 calories every day in surplus of
weight maintenance guidelines for a period of 2 months found that 2/3 of the
elevated overall daily energy was spent through height levels of NEAT. In some
people over consumptions triggers NEAT causing them to waste extra energy, on
the contrary the failure to trigger the NEAT responses results in accumulation
of fat.
Through these scientific studies three key elements were evaluated as to the
contributing cause of energy waste the BMR, Postprandial thermo genesis and
Physical activity. It is suggest that an estimated 33% of a thousand extra
calories are burned off through NEAT. The rest of the calories which is 39%
accumulates’ as Fat. Another 4% percent is dumped in other tissues in the body,
8% is expended by the BMR, and 14% is appropriated to postprandial thermo
genesis.
Blood chemistry analysis was used to gauge energy disbursement in subject
patients ages 25 and 36. Each subject was not overweight and held inactive
employment nor did they exercise on a regular basis. In all 16 subjects a
variance in weight gain ranged between 2 to 16lbs, on average of 10lbs gained
during a 2 month research session. The participants with the highest level of
NEAT accumulated less fat that recommends the NEAT activity in certain people
assist in calories burn off, which in turns assist with weight control.
It is estimated that 56% of the extra calories were exhausted. In other words
they did not accumulate as surplus fat. However these calories dissipated in
one of three ways: through elevated energy expending during the resting period,
Thermal effect of certain foods or NEAT. NEAT or “Fidgeting Factor” accounts
for 2/3 of the calories burned from minute but recurring movement.
Of the NEAT active participant that lost more calories and accumulated less fat
displayed several symptoms of FIDGETING FACTOR, however other activity levels
such as exercise and Thermo Genesis remain the same. Yet the biggest factors in
deviations of the participants, the 4 women showed the lowest increase in NEAT
activity and gain the most weight among the subjects. It was concluded those
people who over ate efficiently dispersed extra energy to avoid fat storage and
others are more prone to becoming overweight.
